Armando Guebuza from the ruling Frelimo is the new president of Mozambique. The elections were held on the 1st and 2nd of December to choose a successor to Joaquim Chissano, who had been in power for 18 years. Renamo, the main opposition party, has alleged widespread fraud in the voting and counting process and has demanded a re-run. International observers state that there were some irregularities in the electoral process but that it was, in general, free and transparent.
